Sometimes Losing is Winning!

The earring that started a new chapter in my life
Whenever I go on a vacation, I like to bring home a souvenir or memento from that place. What better souvenir is there than something made by a local artist in that town. Having visited Des Moines, Iowa a couple of summers ago I was taken to a unique art boutique wherein everything in the store came from a local artist. As I was walking around browsing I was drawn to a display of earrings. As I looked at them I noticed that one in particular really got my attention. At the bottom of each earring was a spiral shape made out of silver wire. They were calling out to me to be taken home. For a week I wore them everyday. I was home from my trip and getting ready to go to a friend's party. Without a question I was going to wear my new earrings. I enjoyed the day with friends and meeting new people. It wasn't until I got home I discovered one earring was missing from my ear. A call to my friend and she was emptying out the vacuum bag she used to clean up after the party. No luck. I accepted that the earring was gone. It was sometime later that I wrote to our hostess in Iowa about losing the earring. She said, to my surprise, she knew how to get in touch with the artist. Send the one earring back and she'll ask if she can make the other one for me. The next day after sending a photo of the earring to the artist, the woman said she did not have those beads currently in her collection. I ran to my local bead store hoping to find those beads. When I could not, I selected some other beads and got 2 of each so she might make up a new pair. The next day I got another email from our hostess in Iowa. She said the artist went and got the needed beads. I looked down at my purchase and thought, what do I do with these now? I drove back to my local bead store and asked them for help. Could they show me how to make a pair of earrings. They graciously agreed to help. And that is how I got started making jewelry. By losing an earring, I gained a new skill.

I am reminded that the universe works in strange ways. So glad it does!

  1. I didn't know that's how you started making jewelry, Lynne! Fortunately for me, you did, and now I have the green "Spring" necklace you made for me last year, and the lovely earrings as well! I love the colors you use - and always receive compliments on your jewelry. Thank you!

  3. Lynne, I really can appreciate this point of view. Most of my creative impulses come from a movement from loss (or lost) to found ... a memory, a melody, a word. That lost earring was like a particle accelerator in your life, helping you create more pretty matter in the universe. Neat!
